1234 by Feist appears on her latest album, The Reminder. This indie rocker from Calgary has produced a string of sweet, melodic songs with simple, clean arrangements, and 1234 is from the same mold. The single has caught the attention of the digital crowd, with significant traffic on iTunes and elsewhere online, largely because the video of “1234” is highlighted in the new iPod ads from Apple highlighting the Video Nano.

You can catch Feist live in concert this Fall. She’s touring Europe through the end of October, and has dates in the US in November.

You can give it a listen at her MySpace page, and her website “ListentoFeist”

Song of the Week – July 27th

Sorry, catching up here. The preparing for the PanMassChallenge took me offline for a bit, but here’s a worthy bit to catch up on….
The Last Goodnight - Poison Kiss
“Pictures of You” from the group The Last Goodnight is the first single off an album (Poison Kiss) due out August 28th. The rest of the released tracks are also musically rich and complex songs that are very listenable. ‘Pictures’ starts out with a Steely Dan sound but transitions quickly into a more modern piano & guitar band sound (Fountains of Wayne, FastBall, Maroon 5), strong but not heavy. It’s a really interesting mix of styles which makes each track different. This Enfield Connecticutt spawned band has got tremendous talent.

The single ‘Poison Kiss’ isn’t getting airplay yet, but it’s as good or better than ‘Pictures of You’. If these two are any indication the album will be outstanding.

Their website isn’t totally obvious TheLastGoodnight.net

Their MySpace page is….

Great Escape by Boston band Boys Like Girls is the first single off their debut album.

The band has the same energy as My Chemical Romance or The All-American Rejects, but lacks the dark undertone that exists on nearly all MCR tracks, and some of the AAR songs. Great Escape is a high energy pop-rock tune and the production is very tight and clean, thanks no doubt to Matt Squire who also worked with Panic! at the Disco.

Their website is almost non-existent, but their MySpace page does a better job. Give the track a listen on Myspace if you haven’t already heard it on the air….

One of my favorite podcasts, and now really a fantastic franchise; Insomnia Radio has the best indie music delivered in a series of geographically focused episodes. Originally focused on major metropolitan areas in the US, Insomnia Radio has gone global with episodes from around the world.

This is a great introduction to the indie music scene in major (and minor) centers of creativity. Check out the latest episodes here: Insomnia Radio at Podcast.com

Happy Birthday to my sister Kathleen!
Tori Amos

Things have been very busy, so this is late, but the Song of the Week is Tori Amos “Big Wheel”, from her new album American Doll Posse. The album released May 1 and is Tori’s first new album in 2 years. There are several potentially successful singles in the album, which is much more mainstream than some of her earlier concept albums. Bouncing Off Clouds and Smokey Joe are likely to surpass Big Wheel on the Singles charts later this year.

Tori is kicking off a world tour at the end of the month.

A new feature starting this week: Podcast of the Week, with a focus on podcasts that present, recommend, review or promote artists, music, or particular musical genres.

This week the Podcast of the Week is Pete Cogle’s PC Podcast. PC Podcast is a veteran podcast that Pete has been producing twice a week since January 2006. The podcast is entirely podsafe music, almost entirely indie, and the range of music is extremely wide with artists from many styles and many countries. Not the sort of stuff for those who never venture outside of Top 40 formula bands, but if you are into world music and discovering indie artists, you should check out PC Podcast.
