This was one of the easiest selections in some time. Some weeks have no clear best new song, others have a couple to chose from. This week there was only one new song that jumped out at me and it’s a solid song of the week.

Matchbox 20’s new single ‘How Far We’ve Come’ from their upcoming album ‘Exile on Mainstream’ which is not due out until October. When held up against a wide array of tepid releases this Summer, How Far We’ve Come stands out for it energy and the strength of Rob Thomas’ vocals.

The album also marks the first new album for the group in 5 years, time spent largely on solo projects most notably Thomas’ successful debut solo album ‘Something to Be’ which topped the charts in 2005. The group claims this album is being written as a collective effort, rather than being principally composed by Thomas as in the past. The influence of Steve Lillywhite, taking his first turn as producer for the group can be sensed in the intensity of the first single which is reminiscent of Lillywhite projects U2 and Talking Heads.

The band’s website is still a placeholder as of this date, but their MySpace page is a little more interesting.
